They are disposable plastic shopping bags, and Australians use nearly seven billion of them every year.
They litter public spaces, kill turtles, pelicans, and other wildlife, and take up to hundreds of years to decompose.
But their days are numbered. Australian state and federal governments recently pledged to phase out plastic bags within 5 years, with a 50% reduction by 2005.
Retail giants Bunnings and IKEA have already started charging customers for plastic bags to discourage their use, and many other chains are set to follow suit.
Fortunately there is an alternative: reusable shopping bags.
They are inexpensive, durable, and environmentally friendly. Consumers have embraced them in droves in many countries, and the signs indicate that Australians will be next.
